Cm7/Cm(maj7) adding a 7th type Interval to a Minor Chord
You can add a 7th interval to a major chord, but also to a minor chord. And this can get confusing! Let's have a look. There are two types of third intervals we can add to our basic three note chord; the minor 3rd interval and the major 3rd interval. And we have two types of basic chords major and minor. So if we have
C major (+m3 or M3) C minor (+m3 or M3)
Using C major gives two options: 1) C7 2) Cmaj7
and now we add the third intervals to the Minor chord: 3) Cm7 (using m3) 4) Cm(maj7) (using M3)
The 3 chord is a minor chord with an added minor third interval. The 4th chord is a C minor chord but with a major 3rd interval added.
Listen to these chords: C7 Cmaj7 Cm7 Cm(maj7)
