Classical guitarist Gregory Dinger will perform on Wednesday, March 27, at Bard College

Classical guitarist Gregory Dinger will perform on Wednesday, March 27, at Bard College. The recital, presented by the Bard Music Program, is free and open to the public and will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Bard Hall. The program is entitled "A Trio of Musical Pairs" and will contrast the music of selected composers of the baroque era, modern era, and Latin America.

Dinger will play his adaptation of the Prelude from J. S. Bach's Fourth Cello Suite and a selection of five harpsichord sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, in his own transcriptions. The second part of the program will feature never-before-transcribed early music ("Musica Ricercata" from the early 1950s) by Gyorgy Ligeti, considered one of the greatest composers of the late 20th century, with the guitar repertoire's new "warhorse," the "Fall of the House of Usher" waltz by Russian composer Nikita Koshkin. The final portion of the concert will contrast four similarly titled pieces by the Mexican composer Manuel Ponce (who wrote mostly for Andrés Segovia) and the Paraguayan virtuoso Agustín Barrios Mangoré (whose career was eclipsed by Segovia's).

Gregory Dinger is an instrumental instructor and teacher with Luis Garcia-Renart of the classical guitar seminar at Bard College. He is also a classical guitar instructor at the State University of New York, New Paltz, and he teaches guitar, music theory, and history at Ulster County Community College. In addition, Dinger teaches various guitar styles at Allegro Music in Kingston. After piano studies as a child, he studied guitar with Luis Garcia-Renart (professor of music at Bard). He is a graduate of the New England Conservatory and has taken master classes with Frederic Hand, Eliot Fisk, Manuel Barrueco, Sharon Isbin, and Christopher Parkening.

Since 1985, Dinger has hosted and programmed WDST radio's Sunrise Concert classical music show. In addition to solo recitals as a classical guitarist, he has performed concerti by Vivaldi, Villa-Lobos, and Rodrigo with the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra and also in the Hudson Valley Philharmonic's "New Wave" concerts. Dinger is part of the Cantilena flute and guitar duo (with Melissa Sweet) and the Arabesque Trio (with flute and bassoon) and sings in the choral group Ars Choralis. He has played various styles of guitar, as well as banjo and mandolin, in rock, pop, heavy-metal, and blues groups and Broadway shows. Dinger also performs in the folk/pop group Time Pieces. He is president of the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra and has had guitar arrangements published by Music Arts Graphics.
