D'addario packaging goes completely environmentally friendly in 2001
J. D’Addario & Company, Inc. is stepping up changes to its product packaging in 2001 to feature only environmentally friendly packaging.
In 1992, the company initiated a gradual change in the packaging of its most popular D’Addario guitar and bass string sets. Until then, it was expected that every guitar string set would include a vinyl pouch, a set insert and individual paper envelopes, all of which would be discarded as soon as players strung their guitar.
"We recognized that this was a tremendous waste of materials, and that’s why we created ‘environmentally friendly’ string packaging," says D’Addario Brand Manager Peter D’Addario. "The new environmental packages seal all six strings in a ‘Corrosion Intercept’ bag, which is then inserted in a recycled cardboard pouch. The ball ends of the strings are color-coded, so players can differentiate between each gauge."
The end result is 75 percent less packaging material than traditionally packaged string sets, saving hundreds of thousands of pounds of paper annually, as illustrated below:

The savings in material and costs also allowed D’Addario to lower the retail price of each environmental set by $1. In recent years, D’Addario has expanded its environmental packaging program; to the point now where more than 135 sets of guitar and bass strings are offered in this revolutionary package.
"Several years after pioneering the environmental string package, we made another significant breakthrough, by incorporating Corrosion Intercept technology to our packaging," says Peter D’Addario. "As a result, we replaced each plastic bag, used to contain strings in our environmentally packaged sets, with a powerful Corrosion Intercept version. The new bag employs a plastic containing a gas-neutralizing barrier in the polymer matrix. This barrier reacts with and neutralizes gasses that cause materials, especially metals, to tarnish. Each bag guarantees that D’Addario strings are as fresh and tarnish-free as the day we packaged them. Not to mention the fact that each CI bag is both environmentally friendly and completely recyclable."
