Guitar Riff Songwriting Basics

Writing a good, or even great, guitar riff is one of the most difficult things in guitar songwriting. But what is a good guitar riff?

A good guitar riff is one that makes you want to pick up a guitar and play it. Or it is a melody like part that people remember because they can sing it or remember it. Some examples of guitar riffs that stick include:

The intro of deep purple, smoke on the water. Intro and theme of Guns n Roses Sweet Child of Mine. Metallica's Enter Sandman, Nirvana Smells like teen spirit, Dire Straits money for nothing, Red hot chili peppers under the bridge and there are many more I could mention.

But there are also many other good guitar riffs that you might not be able to "sing" or remember immediately but when you hear the song you think, wow what a great song. Some recent examples of this type of songs are bands like Evanescence and Linkin Park, to name a few.

So a good guitar riff is really a guitar part that goes beyond basic chords and rhythms, and make the song so much better.
