New York Guitar Festival to release compilation CD Guitar Harvest

Following the success of its first two seasons of concerts and radio broadcasts, the New York Guitar Festival is currently creating an exclusive compilation CD entitled Guitar Harvest, which will promote the Festival as well as raise money for a scholarship fund. "The original idea behind the Festival," said Executive Director and Festival founder David Spelman, "was to put guitars into the hands of New York City public school students with no strings attached, and we're proud to have begun that process at the Manhattan School for Children. Because the guitar is used in so many genres of music and so many cultures, it has a unique potential to bring together disparate communities. Proceeds from the sale of the Guitar Harvest CD will enable us to fund scholarships that provide guitars and musical training free of charge, and in the process encourage hope and inspiration through music-making at a time when arts education has fallen prey to so many budgetary cut-backs."

The current beneficiaries of the New York Guitar Festival's scholarship programs are students enrolled at the Manhattan School for Children (PS/MS 333), a unique and innovative elementary school in New York City. The school's mission calls for children to learn by doing, and for parents to take an active role in their children's education. Appreciation of cultural and racial diversity is fostered, and the curriculum recognizes that children learn at different rates, applying individual strengths and learning styles.

Spelman and WNYC Radio's John Schaefer are co-executive producers of the CD which will be released by KOCH International in fall 2001. Echoing the educational emphasis of the festival, the theme of the disc is "Teachers, Mentors & Inspirations." Acoustic guitarist Alex DeGrassi plays a tune by guitar icon a{Jimi Hendrix}; the Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo pay respect to their Cuban mentors in a rendition of Albeniz's Cuba; while eclectic jazzman a{Bill Frisell} plays a duet with his old guitar teacher, Dale Breuning. Ralph Towner (Oregon) contributes a multi-tracked duet in tribute to the German lutenist Sylvius Leopold Weiss, while gifted young acoustic guitarist Richard Leo Johnson pays respect to the Delta blues tradition with "The New West Helena Blues." And Gary Lucas fondly remembers his late songwriting partner Jeff Buckley, joined by former Buckley drummer Matt Johnson on tablas. Other guitarists represented on Guitar Harvest include Andy Summers (The Police), Vernon Reid (Living Colour), Pierre Bensusan, Mike Stern, Trey Gunn, David Patterson (New World Guitar Trio), Benjamin Verdery, The California Guitar Trio, Henry Kaiser and The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet.

David Spelman, a conservatory-trained classical guitarist who by day runs a public relations firm in New York City, first set out to create the New York Guitar Festival because "music has enriched my life, and it's time to give something back. Representing clients like the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the American Symphony Orchestra and the Czech Philharmonic is deeply gratifying, but I also wanted to make a contribution to society through my first passion--the guitar. As I got started, it was a comment by the playwright August Wilson that served as my mantra: 'Art changes individuals, and individuals change society...' These words continued to inspire me. While I am deeply indebted to the D'Addario Foundation for the Performing Arts, I decided early on that I didn't want to go only after large foundations or government money. I would, of course, welcome them if they came to us. What I really wanted to do was to ask artists to contribute what they do -- and I am especially grateful to the wonderful guitarists who have contributed to this CD. And finally, the talented kids who benefit from this program are an inspiration to us all; our contribution to their education is a contribution to our own future."
