Saturday night live rocks with Yamaha
Whether they’re cranking up the audience in Studio 8H, providing background music for a skit or crafting a jingle for a commercial parody, the Saturday Night Live Band is never far from the action on NBC’s long-running comedy show. Guitarist Lukasz Gottwald, now in his third season with the SNL Band, relies on the Yamaha Pacifica single cutaway electric guitar to make sure every week’s performance tops the last.
"I am a full-out Yamaha fan," Gottwald says. "I have two of the Pacificas and they’re both great. I’ve tried guitars from other manufacturers, and found that they just don’t have the quality control." Gottwald also owns a Yamaha SA2200 classic double cutaway semi-acoustic guitar, which he used on the show before adopting the Pacifica. In his Manhattan home studio, where he often records music for use on the air, he uses a Yamaha DG100-212 digital guitar 100-watt amplifier and a Yamaha AN1X control synthesizer. "The DG100 is the main amp in my studio, and I’ve also used my AN1X to make music for the show," he explains. Along with his bandmates, Gottwald performs anywhere from 16 to 24 pieces of music for each 90-minute show, ranging from skit music and jingles to the full-blown jams that take place during commercial breaks. Gottwald is also active as a recording artist and producer. With partner Liquid Todd, radio host of "Solid State" Saturday nights on New York’s 92.3 FM K-ROCK, he has formed the band "Wide" and signed with Lava Atlantic Records. He has also produced projects for other artists under the Priority Records and Columbia labels. His collection of Yamaha instruments and equipment comes in handy on those projects as well, he says. The Pacifica single-cutaway electric guitar, available in Natural, Violin Sunburst or Translucent Blue, uses a versatile combination of one humbucker and two single-coil pickups on a maple-on-alder body to provide ample definition and snap. The AN1X is a 61-key control synthesizer that captures the sound and feel of an analog synthesizer using DSP-based modeling of analog circuitry and "analog-style" real-time interfaces.
